Tapestries and Tales Curriculum ©2007 by Nathaniel Needle, Ed.D.
SUMMARY
This series of lessons merges the young person's introduction to weaving with his or her creative mastery of language. This happens first through reading and orally re-telling weaving folktales from around the world. Second, students enjoy a hands-on SAORI experience in making "team tapestries". Next, the weaving team members collectively create an original story that they see in their tapestry. Then they orally share that story with other teams. Finally, each member of the team writes his or her own version of that orally shared story, a process not unlike how varying versions of well-known fairy tales probably emerged from oral traditions.
Lesson plans correlated with the Massachusetts Learning Frameworks are available for non-profit educational use from the author for a negotiable fee. Each lesson is accompanied by an evaluation rubric that relates to the holistic social, artistic, and academic goals of the curriculum. One of these goals is to bridge gaps, within a collaborative project, between students who are and are not receiving special education services.
Below are photos of final team weavings surrounded by the individual versions of the team story, as created by the 4th grade class of Lauren Chuk at Goddard School of Science and Technology, a Worcester Public Magnet School (Marion Guerra, Principal). This effort was made possible by a contract with the VSA Arts Community of Practice Project
