Tapestries and Tales Curriculum ©2007 by Nathaniel Needle, Ed.D.
SUMMARY
This series of lessons merges the young person's introduction to weaving with his or her creative mastery of language. This happens first through reading and orally re-telling weaving folktales from around the world. Second, students enjoy a hands-on SAORI experience in making "team tapestries". Next, the weaving team collectively creates an original story that they see in their tapestry, then orally shares that story with others. Finally, each member of the team writes his or her own version of that orally shared story, a process not unlike how we might imagine the 4 Gospels to have emerged from shared oral tradition. Each of the following lessons, certain of which extend over more than one session, is accompanied by an evaluation rubric that relates to the holistic social, artistic, and academic goals of the curriculum. The lessons and rubric links are followed by photos of the team weavings surrounded by the individual versions of the team story, as created by the 4th grade class of Lauren Chuk at Goddard School of Science and Technology, a Worcester Public Magnet School (Marion Guerra, Principal). This effort was made possible by a contract with the VSA Arts Community of Practice Project
